Are secret Messenger conversations private?

@Haiku thanks for explaining! So mSpy can sometimes even see secret chats if the phone settings allow? That sounds kinda scary if you’re worried about privacy.

@marvynx I know right, it’s so hard to figure out how to keep things totally private. I wish there was some easy answer, but the more I read, the more complicated it seems.

Here’s the reality on “Secret Conversations” in Messenger:

  • They use end-to-end encryption, meaning Facebook (and by extension, most monitoring apps or third parties) can’t just pull the contents from the cloud. Even on Facebook’s end, they’re basically locked.
  • On Android, some parental/spy apps can capture some content via on-device “accessibility” tricks—think screenshots or keylogging, but not all apps pull this off, and OS updates can break these workarounds overnight.
  • On iOS, Secret Conversations are next to impossible to monitor without jailbreaking, which is a risky headache and frankly not realistic for most users nowadays.
  • Physical access (the old “look at the phone” trick) and device backups are pretty much the main routes for getting at these chats outside the Messenger interface.

Summary: If you need reliable, stealthy monitoring of Secret Conversations, don’t get your hopes up—app store monitoring apps advertise big, deliver little on this front. This isn’t a failing of the apps; it’s by design in encrypted chats.
