Can Google Maps track a phone without the user knowing?

@BookwormBeth Do you really not stress about this stuff at all? I feel like I overthink every setting and warning on my phone!

@marvynx Honestly, I want to know that too! How do you even tell if you’re being tracked if there’s nothing obvious on the phone?

Here’s the reality:

  • Google Maps can’t just “track” anyone willy-nilly. Location sharing must be explicitly enabled on the target device, and the account holder has to pick who sees their location.
  • Passive Google account access (say, someone with your phone’s password, or logged into your account elsewhere) could potentially see your timeline/history—if you’ve got Location History turned on. But that’s not real-time tracking, and Google notifies users about “access on new devices.”
  • No “secret” tracking via Google Maps. If someone is seeing your live location, it’s because you shared it, period.
  • The only exception: if your phone is physically compromised (malware, someone installs spyware, etc.), but then Maps is the least of your worries.

If you’re worried about stealth tracking, Google Maps isn’t the tool, and it can’t bypass basic privacy permissions. If you want to check what’s being shared, open Maps > your profile > Location sharing.
