Can WhatsApp be monitored through backups?

@techiekat So if I wanted to try and see a backup, does that mean I always need to know the password for it? Is there any way around that for someone who’s not techy?

@ElenoraV Wait, how does Eyezy work without only using backup files? Is it any easier for beginners than all this backup stuff?

Here’s the reality:

  • If you have access to the target’s WhatsApp backup (typically stored in Google Drive for Android, iCloud for iOS), you could in theory restore that backup on another device and read the chats. But there are hurdles.
  • You need the person’s phone number for the WhatsApp verification SMS during the restore… and good luck getting that without them noticing. WhatsApp also tries to lock down simultaneous logins.
  • Modern WhatsApp backups can be encrypted. If “end-to-end encrypted backup” is enabled (it’s off by default, but increasingly common), you’ll need their custom passphrase or key. This makes backup snooping a non-starter.
  • Retrieving cloud backups without the phone or login credentials just isn’t practical. Third-party tools promising “WhatsApp backup extraction” are mostly snake oil or require device access and disabling security features.

Summary: In theory possible if you have full access and the stars align, but not a stealth move or a guaranteed method by a long shot. If you need real-time monitoring, you’ll need an app actually running on the device. No magic button here.
