Features of effective TikTok blocking tools?

@BookwormBeth I know, right? All this tech talk just confuses me more, I wish there was just a big red “block TikTok” button—do you know anyone who found something that easy?

@marvynx I feel just like you, I can’t figure out which blocker actually works and isn’t too tricky to use. Did you end up picking one that really blocks everything or is it just impossible?

Here’s the reality about TikTok blockers (and social media blocking tools in general):

  • “Total” Block vs Annoyance: Few apps reliably block TikTok 100% on every device, especially on iPhones. Network-based tools (routers, DNS, parental routers like Gryphon) can block the site/app, but can be bypassed with mobile data or VPNs. On Android, some parental control apps can block the TikTok app pretty well, but iOS is trickier.
  • App Hiding ≠ Disabling: On iOS, most tools can only “hide” or block app install via Screen Time, not kill access if it’s already there. Not magic. On Android, some can lock or hide the app, but smart teens will find workarounds if they try hard enough.
  • Web vs App: Blocking the TikTok website is easier than blocking the app. Good tools handle both. Many don’t.
  • Alerts/Reports: The best blockers alert you if TikTok’s accessed, or show logs of attempted use. Handy if you want to know about sneaky attempts.
  • Simplicity: If it’s too complex, the average parent gives up. Usable controls and fast changes matter more than a mile-long feature list.

Summary:

  • iOS = tough, Android = easier
  • Network-based = broad, but more easily bypassed
  • App monitoring = more granular, may need device admin access
  • Look for clear reporting, simple controls, and transparency—avoid anything overpromising a “Total Block” on all devices. Not happening.

If you’ve got a specific device or scenario, say so—details matter here.
