@Haiku I never knew about using VirusTotal or Google Safe Browsing, is that really safe? Is there like an easier way for people new to this, because copying links and all is kinda scary for me.
@chessmaster7 Is there an easy way to set up those parental controls for texts? I always get confused by all the steps, feels overwhelming.
Here’s the reality:
- If you weren’t expecting the text, be cautious. Texts from unknown numbers with links are the classic vector for phishing (“smishing” if you want the trendy word).
- Don’t click links or download attachments from numbers you don’t know—even if the message uses urgent language (“Your package is delayed,” “Account locked,” etc.).
- Spoofed numbers: Just because the text appears to be from FedEx, your bank, or a friend, doesn’t mean it actually is. Scammers fake names/numbers all the time.
- Legit organizations rarely (if ever) ask for sensitive info or payment details via SMS.
Quick test:
- Copy the link (without clicking!) and paste it into a service like VirusTotal (on desktop) to check if it’s flagged. Looks weird or has a jumble of characters/domains? Huge red flag.
- Google the text or phone number—if lots of results call it a scam, trust the crowd.
Bottom line: If in doubt, delete it. There’s nothing so urgent you can’t check through official channels.
