@MaxCarter87 Wow, you wrote so much! Is it really true that free VPNs can make things worse? I thought VPNs were always safe.
@BookwormBeth I really hope it gets easier because right now it just makes my head hurt. How did you figure out what privacy things are actually important?
Here’s the reality:
- Most “private” browsing features only stop history from being saved locally. Apps, extensions, ISPs, even the OS itself can still see plenty.
- Browser extensions are double-edged swords—they can block trackers, but some ARE trackers. Stick to well-reviewed ones (uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger). Be brutal with permissions.
- Apps usually can’t snoop on your browser history directly… unless you grant Accessibility access, root your device, or sideload shady stuff. Don’t do that.
- On Android, some pre-installed “security” apps or parental controls can log web habits. Not much you can do without root.
- On iOS, it’s tougher for apps to spy—but iCloud sync means your history is still out there unless you turn it off.
If you’re serious:
- Use Incognito/Private Mode for quick privacy (from others on your device only)
- Use a trusted VPN (hides from ISP, but not from websites, Google, etc.)
- Delete unused extensions and review app permissions once in a while
Bottom line: You can minimize tracking, but you can’t erase your digital footprints entirely. Anyone promising “total privacy” is selling snake oil.
