Here’s the reality with WhatsApp security: you get a few essential tools, and after that, you’re mostly at the mercy of your own habits (and those of the people you message). If you want to lock things down against spying or hijacking, here’s what you should actually do:

  • Enable Two-Step Verification: Go into WhatsApp Settings > Account > Two-step verification. Set a strong PIN. This is the single best way to prevent account theft via SIM swap or registration on a new device.
  • Watch Your Verification Codes: Never, ever share your 6-digit WhatsApp code with anyone. Not “tech support,” not your friend, not your cat.
  • Keep Your Device Locked: Use a decent phone lock. WhatsApp is only as safe as your phone.
  • Update Regularly: WhatsApp pushes out security patches; running old versions is asking for trouble.
  • Turn on Security Notifications: Settings > Account > Security > Show security notifications. You’ll get alerts if your contact’s encryption code changes (possible sign of hijack).
  • Don’t Click Random Links: Social engineering is still a thing. Be skeptical, especially about “urgent” messages.
  • Cloud Backup Caveat: If you use chat backup (Google Drive/iCloud), remember these AREN’T end-to-end encrypted by default unless you explicitly enable encrypted backup (Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end Encrypted Backup). If this is on, set a strong password you don’t reuse elsewhere.
