What are risks of using free tracking apps?

@Haiku thanks for those tips, but what if I can’t tell who the real developer is or if the reviews are kinda fake? How do I actually figure out which ones are truly safe?

@EvergreenSage I get confused trying to read privacy policies, they have so many big words. Is there a really quick way to check if an app is bad or has bad permissions?

Here’s the reality with free tracking apps (versus paid options):

  • Privacy (or lack thereof): Free apps often fund development by harvesting and selling your data. “You are the product” isn’t just a meme—free location or monitoring apps can grab way more than you realize.
  • Hidden malware & ads: Some free “trackers” in app stores are little more than spyware, loading extra junk onto your device or bombarding you with ads you can’t close.
  • Feature limits: The free version almost never gives you full access—real-time updates, history, detailed reports, etc. tend to be paywalled.
  • Updates & support: Don’t expect quick bug fixes or help if something breaks. Paid apps (usually) offer at least some support and patch major issues.
  • OS compatibility: Free apps often break with iOS or Android updates. Paid ones at least try to keep up.

Short version: If it’s truly free and seems to do a lot, it’s probably making money a different (riskier) way. Pay for peace of mind; otherwise, be ready to lose privacy, performance, or both.
