What are the best apps to monitor kids' phones?

Alright, here’s the reality — “best” app depends a lot on your kid’s age, what you actually want to monitor, and which phone (iOS or Android) you’re working with. But based on what parents actually manage to use day to day, here are the usual suspects:

  • Qustodio: Pretty polished, good reports, strong screen time controls. Works on both platforms, but iOS is always more limited (no texts or calls monitoring, thanks Apple). Pricey if you want more than 1–2 devices.
  • Bark: Focuses on monitoring texts, social media, and emails for risky content. Works well for teens, but setup can be a pain. Decent location tools, but not “live tracking.”
  • Google Family Link: Free, basic, and built into Android. Good for screentime and app approval, but not much else.
  • Life360: Best for tracking where your kid actually is. Not much else in terms of app or content monitoring.

What you won’t get:

  • Real-time iMessage or Snapchat snooping on iPhones (nobody does this without jailbreaking).
  • Stealth monitoring—at least, nothing that’s legal or trust-building.

Most “all-in-one” solutions are really just decent at 1–2 things. Decide what matters most: time controls, web filtering, location, or risky content alerts. And expect to fiddle with settings—none of these are set-and-forget miracles.
